Development of an Automated Heat Forming System for Composite Helmet Manufacturing

Goopter is an innovative technology organization exploring smart manufacturing, automation, and mechatronic systems integration for industrial process improvement. We are currently developing an economic, small-scale automation system for forming composite helmet shells — aiming to demonstrate how Industry 4.0 technologies can be applied to low-cost manufacturing environments. This project focuses on automating a manual composite forming process that currently uses a handheld heat gun and manual pressing to shape layered materials (e.g., Kevlar, fiberglass) over a mold. Learners will design, simulate, and build a semi-automated forming station that uses: - Controlled infrared (IR) or hot-air heating - Pneumatic or servo-driven pressure system - Temperature and pressure sensors - Digital control interface (microcontroller or PLC) - Optional IoT/SCADA dashboard for process monitoring The goal is to produce a working prototype demonstrating consistency, safety, and process data collection suitable for scalable manufacturing. Project Objectives Design and develop an automated or semi-automated forming station for composite materials, limit the material cost for building each machine within $1500 budget; Integrate sensors and control systems for real-time process feedback (temperature, pressure, timing). Implement data acquisition and visualization (via IoT or SCADA platform). Allow remote monitoring and control via Internet, automatically record the manufacturing process, and auto count the productivity for each machine; auto generate daily report; Optimize process parameters to improve forming quality, reduce manual labor, and ensure uniform heat application. Demonstrate the system as a proof-of-concept Industry 4.0 workstation Key Activities for Learners Research: Study current manual forming techniques and identify automation opportunities. Design: Create CAD models of the forming station, select components (mechanical and electronica parts, actuators, heaters, sensors); do incremental design and development - verify the performance improvement of the structural design with manual intervention, then add in more automation and reduce manual intervention, so on and so force; Build & Integrate: Assemble a prototype using available tools, test and choose 1-2 best viable design; Program & Test: Develop control logic (microcontroller/PLC), calibrate heating cycles, and record process data; Analyze & Document: Present findings with performance metrics and recommendations for full-scale deployment.

French Translation for web & mobile applications

Goopter is a Vancouver-based SaaS(software as service) company offering multi-language eCommerce solutions for small businesses. We help businesses quickly create and own an online ordering website/mobile app without any coding or designing experience; we have multiple applications that are designed for different purposes. Each of the applications can support multi-languages; we are looking for help to add the French, Spanish, German, and Arabic translations for the web and mobile applications. We will provide the resource file for the English translation, and the students need to help with adding the corresponding translations and go over the actual web page or mobile app to make sure the translation fits the context. Each resource file requires about 1200- 2000 lines of translations; about half of them are less than six words. During the internship, the student will work directly with the development team and myself; we will communicate via email, slack, or skype.
